So a too large ported box will be under-damped while a too small one will be over-damped when above tuning. A ported box isn't just a box with a hole in it. The best I ever personally owned was a 10w6v2 that was just in the perfect sealed box. I'm sure there are better but man I miss that woofer. That being said, I run a sundown sa8v3 that's ported and it's drastically cleaner than any ported woofer I ever had.
Mostly I listen to rock and metal, but I do like to listen to trap and other music that digs low. Sealed boxes will have less distortion and better cone control than ported boxes. But they are not more accurate than ported boxes when it comes to frequency response. Sealed boxes tends to have F3 at as high as 60-80 hz and drops like a rock under 50hz, while ported boxes can be fine tuned to be completely flat down to 20 hz if needed. When you place that same subwoofer into a sealed box, a massive output of noise will come out in comparison to the noise of when it is not in a box. That is due to the rear waves of the woofer being blocked off by the box, and the front waves are able to produce vibrations in the air. Ported Example - SVS PB-4000 13.5" 1200W Ported Box Subwoofer Ported subwoofers can reach lower on the frequency spectrum and render the most demanding low-frequency content with more vigor at higher volumes, meaning it can play louder and lower even with the same amplifier power and driver measurements, and the larger cabinet volume has a .
Sealed subwoofers hold an advantage in group delay and transient response. The thing is that a properly designed sealed and vented subwoofer will both have group delay below the level of audibility as will be the slightly delayed transient response. Many claim that a sealed subwoofer provides better midbass, but that is a misconception. After make a research of the better sub for this aplication, finally I will pull the trigger for a NVX VSW104v2 (350w rms, hi sensitivity and an optional metal grille). I had just modeled both, in sealed and ported, and frankly, it does very good in a sealed, but I´m a little concerned with the overall output (this Jetta´s trunk is very .
Keep in mind a ported box is exactly the same as a sealed box except the port acts as a 2nd speaker for hitting the low notes louder. . Currently I run a ported 10W6 and it’s very deep and smooth and still fairly tight, but for rock/metal, I .Assuming both boxes are built to spec, everything else remains constant, in a large SUV, listening to everything from rap to country, which would you.A sealed box generally produces a tighter and more accurate sound, but less output using the same equipment than if you were using a ported/vented box. Ported would give you louder bass using the same amp/sub and would allow for some airflow to keep the box from overheating, but the sound would not be as perfectly accurate as in a sealed box .

A ported box allows air movement through ports, enabling deeper bass and more flexibility in tuning to specific frequencies. However, ported enclosures may not offer the tight bass response of sealed boxes. Bandpass boxes are a hybrid, isolating the subwoofer between sealed and ported chambers. They offer more precise control over a desired . 1. when mentioning I lost 10db moving the ported box in trunk. I had it 6” from the rear facing the rear first, wanted trunk space back so pushed it towards the front of the car to give me about 2’ of trunk space. That made me lose 10db. I would of course build a panel to the face of the box to make it look nice and flush 2.
Sealed is the way to go for quality, ported for volume, although some ported boxes are designed to play nice, but generally a sealed box will deliver more accurate and lower bass, depending on your sub setup, amp, enclosure size, etc I just picked up a kicker L7 and a pre fabbed sealed box, i also have a q logic ported box from another system. I tested it out in the sealed and it was ok, but i dont think it has enough airspace, and in the ported its good for rap bass but it doesnt seem to hit hard. i bought the sub from my friend so i dont have any manual for it and i dont know whats best for it, also .In general though, a ported box will be louder than a sealed one at the same power level. .
